Doug Van De Zande was born in Hampton, Virginia and raised in Poughkeepsie, New York. Starting with photography in high school, he went on to work in a very well regarded portrait studio for most of the next four years. With the desire to make a career out of this medium, Doug moved to Santa Barbara, California and attended the Brooks Institute of Photography. After graduating, Doug preferred the pace and project variety of a smaller market and moved to Raleigh, North Carolina.
