Born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1976, Jennifer Spencer’s family soon moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she spent her childhood.  While in grade school, Jennifer studied privately with local artist Pat Carroll, and her work won several awards in local competitions.

Jennifer later attended University of North Carolina, Greensboro where she studied art history and studio drawing.  She lived in Myrtle Beach for two years, and exhibited her paintings at Collector’s Cafe, one of the few fine art venues in Myrtle Beach.

In 1997, Spencer relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, and began doing commissioned work for many local businesses and residents.  A notable commission of eighteen 6’ by 4’ paintings for Club Tango in 1998 brought recognition and further work as a mural artist.  One of resulting commissions led to an appearance on Channel Five’s Midday Show, in which Jennifer demonstrated decorative painting.

In 2001, Jennifer studied drawing and painting at the Gibbes Studio with artists Rhett Thurman, Jim Darlington and Beth Hodges.  While working part time at Martin Gallery, Jennifer made the acquaintance of acclaimed Maine artist, Mitch Billis, with whom she continues her studies.  Say Spencer of Billis, “Mitch teaches the fundamentals of painting, including edges, value, color and center of interest.  Having Mitch critique each piece is invaluable.  I have also learned a lot by observing him paint and explain his choices and decisions.  His wife, Kathleen, also learned to paint this way, and she has become a wonderful friend and painting companion, as well."

In 2004 Jennifer won an award of excellence in the Charleston Outdoor Painters Association's first annual paint out and exhibition. In 2005, Spencer was one of four artists whose work represented Martin Gallery in the Arts and Antiques Emerging Artist Show in Scottsdale, Arizona. Her work was recently featured in "Edible Lowcountry" magazine, and her painting "Sun and Moon Lilies" will be on display in the 2006 Southern Living Idea House in Daniel Island, SC.  Jennifer Spencer currently lives and works in Charleston, SC.

When asked about her work, Jennifer says, "I hope to present an honest vision in my paintings, and give reverence to often overlooked objects.  Quiet, truth, beauty are all themes I explore in my work.  I enjoy the lifelong learning process that comes with being a painter, and I look forward to future projects and opportunities.
