BEGINNER'S LUCK

Redwood
31 x 14 x 15 in

This piece was carved from a redwood log I found washed up on the Pacific coast. The type of wood isn’t necessarily important, but I like old wood whose travels add character.

Beginner’s Luck depicts a young peregrine falcon on the learning curve trying to catch a swallow. The falcon stooped toward the circling swallows...

...It came very close, but it missed.

A young bird has much to learn if it is to survive its first year. Hunger is a good motivator.

Birds going fast versus slower disturb the air in different ways. I see the swallows flying pretty fast, but the line of the back of the falcon is faster...

This piece won Second Best in World Interpretive Wood sculpture at the Ward World Championships in 2015.
