Open Wide has an American dipper bringing food to it’s young. The dipper is the only aquatic songbird in North America.
One of my favorite things about the dipper is its cheery singing. I saw a dipper using a small area of open water in the Snowy Range in Wyoming. It was twenty degrees below zero and blowing a blizzard. But the bird would jump in and out of the water looking for food. When it emerged it would hop onto a rock and sing its song. It totally cheered up the rather grim conditions as I skied by.
When they pop back to the surface, they will stand on a rock and do lots of deep knee bends. I don’t know if these dips help them stay warm, but it gives them a good name with dipper.
