Brothers of the Wood
By
Leo E. Osborne
This sculpture depicts two woodland creatures, the mysterious Wolf and Raven. Forever have these two resided in an interesting harmony and symbiosis, hence the emerging form of each occupying space within the wood. They are not only born from the same in nature but also born of the same in this sculpture. BROTHERS OF THE WOOD emerges as a statement of artistic and natural harmony.
The Raven is dependent on the Wolf for providing its prey for food. After the Wolves devour their portion, the scavenger birds clean up the remains. Following the feasting, the scene changes to one of humor, as the Raven appears to “dance” around the resting Wolf antagonizing it to lunge at the bird in a game-like interchange.
The Wolf and Raven have been an integral part of Indian lore and mystical vision. With this sculpture I have chosen to honor these two brothers of the wood. They are not only a statement of wildlife concern and that of the environment, but also are symbolic elements of social change. The world emerged form Oneness. Today it is more apparent than ever, that the coming together as one world, one planet is necessary. Humanity is through the visionary eyes of creative souls, standing together as one, not bound by International borders and sovereignties but emerging as one universal family of Brothers in spirit, dependent on one another. We MUST learn the dance of the Raven and the Wolf.
